Once upon a time….in a court which now seems far away…a “for life” spousal maintenance award was not an unusual occurrence. A spouse, divorcing after a medium to long marriage, who had not worked and instead had focused on raising children, would have been likely to receive ongoing financial maintenance from their former spouse until their remarriage (if applicable) or death.
