Marriage and Civil Partnership

Marriage and Civil Partnership

Following recent changes, it is now possible for you and your partner, as a same sex couple, to register your partnership and get married in England and Wales.

Civil partnership and same-sex marriage is similar to civil marriage and in most respects it’s legally the same. For example:

  • You enjoy the same tax treatment
  • Can acquire parental responsibility for each other’s children
  • May adopt a child or apply for a parental order (in respect of a surrogate child)
  • The dissolution/divorce process is the same, although the grounds are slightly different
  • Financial settlements on the termination of the relationship are the same

Both civil partnerships and same sex marriages are still an available form of union. However, if you would like to convert your civil partnership into marriage, we’re happy to help, advise and guide you through the process.
