Event Details
Dorset Chamber is delighted to invite you to join us on Friday 12th November 9-11am at the Top Floor Restaurant at AFC Bournemouth for a healthy breakfast at their first in-person health and wellbeing event, talking about their GU6 initiative supporting mental health for business owners and senior managers. Speakers will include Mind as well as their local partners Dorset Mind.

Background
Recent studies reveal the state of the nation’s mental health as the UK moves out of the pandemic and they make sobering reading. Stress at work continues to be one of the main causes of absence, but one area that has been overlooked is the mental health of business owners* and senior managers who carry the weight of their companies on their shoulders.

As part of Dorset Chamber’s Health and Wellbeing initiatives, they recognise the unique pressure business leaders are under and have been working on building a peer support network to support them.

Earlier this year Dorset Chamber launched the Got Your 6** (GU6) initiative for business owners and senior managers, supported by sponsor Lester Aldridge and facilitated by Ouch Training and Dorset Mind. It aims to break down the stigma attached to mental illness and encouraging compassionate dialogue, leading to psychologically safe workplace cultures allowing the workforce to thrive.
Join Dorset Chamber to hear from an array of speakers supporting mental health for business leaders, and to hear from and meet the ‘GU6 Champions’ – members of the business community who provide confidential peer support to others in need of support.

*BUPA Global found:

  • 64% of board level executives who have experienced symptoms of mental ill-health have turned to potentially unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with stress.
  • 78% have experienced fatigue, lack of motivation, mood swings and disturbed sleep
  • 42% believe that it would damage their reputation if it became public that they were struggling.

**Got Your 6 derives from WW2 fighter pilots who protected the ‘backs’ of fellow pilots in formation at the vulnerable rear position, with the analogy that Dorset Chamber has the backs of the business community. The aim is to provide a confidential and approachable environment for business leaders to share the stresses and strains of running a business, give support where mental health may be affected and to provide relevant signposting where appropriate, to a qualified professional provider.
